Built in the <strong>Romanesque style<\/strong>, its construction began in <strong>1173<\/strong>, but due to soft ground beneath, the tower began to lean during construction. It stands <strong>55 meters tall<\/strong>, with a tilt of about <strong>4 degrees<\/strong>. Originally designed as the <strong>bell tower<\/strong> for the adjacent cathedral (Duomo), it has since become an iconic symbol of Italy.
